“Heaven and earth possess great beauty yet do not speak; the four seasons follow clear laws yet do not debate them.” In the spring of 2025, as the ancient Ritan (Temple of the Sun) once again welcomes the first rays of the morning sun, this sacred site—bearing five centuries of imperial ceremonial history—unfolds a magnificent vision of a “Garden City”, drawing upon its unique historical heritage and artistic character. Originally built in the ninth year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming dynasty (1530), the imperial altar witnessed fourteen emperors performing solemn spring equinox ceremonies to worship the sun. This “Ritan Cup” Art Competition and Exhibition takes this cultural landmark as its creative point of departure, rooting the contemporary theme of “Garden City, Better Life Shared by All” in the fertile soil of history. Through the power of art, it seeks to create a dialogue across time between the ancient temple complex and modern urban civilization, preserving the historical fabric while outlining a contemporary aesthetic vision. Artists from China, the United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland, and other countries have contributed more than one hundred carefully created works—including oil paintings, traditional Chinese paintings, prints, and sculptures—creating an artistic space that transcends time and place. Senior artists, with profound feeling and masterful brushwork, depict the changing beauty of nature through the four seasons. Mid-career artists use both abstract and figurative forms, vivid colours, and expressive lines to interpret the poetry of modern urban life. Young artists have also joined this artistic celebration, bringing freshness, simplicity, and playful imagination that add a sense of childlike delight to the exhibition. Walking through the exhibition, visitors encounter works that convey the tranquil beauty of Eastern aesthetics while exploring the philosophy of harmony between humanity and nature. Here one can appreciate both the texture of contemporary civilization and the modern transformation of traditional artistic expression. Like mirrors, these works reflect the artists’ many-layered interpretations of the exhibition’s theme: “Garden City, Better Life Shared by All.” As we contemplate these artworks, we see not only the artists’ technical skill and creativity but also their thoughtful reflections on the development of urban civilization. How can historical heritage and modern life coexist in harmony? These works offer artistic answers. Through their visual language they express the idea that a true garden city is not merely about beautifying physical space, but also about building and elevating our shared spiritual home. We sincerely welcome every visitor to enter this artistic hall, where history and modernity meet. Here you can experience the power of art, feel the warmth of the city, and together write a new chapter for “Garden City, Better Life Shared by All.” May every visitor discover a personal artistic resonance here, and may the rising sun over Ritan illuminate not only the sky of history, but also our shared aspirations for a better life.
